Addressing Fatigue Failures in Heavy Equipment
One of our clients operates heavy equipment in remote Australian terrain. This equipment often faces fatigue failure due to a combination of dynamic loading conditions. 🚨
The ANI Tanker Study
For this ANI tanker study, we initially performed simulations covering chassis twist and inertial loading scenarios. Both simulations successfully captured the root cause of field failures. 🖥️
To extend the analysis further, we conducted a harmonic response study. This study used a sinusoidal base motion model to simulate road-induced vibrations typical of severe unsealed roads:
Corrugation wavelength: 2.5 m
Amplitude: 30 mm
Vehicle speeds: 60 km/h and 80 km/h
Understanding Phase Differences
Phase differences were applied across axles to reflect how each wheel experiences corrugations differently. This approach captured the worst-case resonant amplification of stresses. ⛓️‍💥
Our baseline model revealed resonance near 8 Hz. This particularly affected the hydraulic cabinet and correlated closely with observed crack zones.
Design Improvements and Validation
Our proposed design iteration showed a marked improvement in vibrational stress response. We significantly reduced dynamic amplification. ✔️
